By Alix Sandler, Founder, Baltimore Cleanup Project
I went kayaking for the first time in Sitka, Alaska, in 2010, and saw some amazing things! Being out on the water was so peaceful and allowed me to witness nature in a way I never had before. I bought my first kayak in 2012, and explored rivers surrounding Baltimore. I was disturbed by how littered some of the rivers were…it’s so beautiful out there- why would anyone dispose of their trash in our water!? Unfortunately, I see this all too often.
What I quickly realized was that a lot of the litter started elsewhere and was washed or blown down to the rivers. Something had to be done. Last summer, my friend, now co-founder, Alex and I realized that no matter how much we picked up on our own, it wasn’t enough.
Everywhere we went, we saw another bottle, flip flop, beer can and even car tires. It really made us feel like our “home” was being invaded by trash. We knew that there were more people like us and that with our powers combined, we could make a big difference in keeping our home, your home, clean.
Baltimore Cleanup Project was created with one main goal: to encourage everyone to come play outside and keep our natural resources and wild areas healthy, safe, and beautiful!
[Tweet “The idea is to give back to your community, and discover yourself in the process. #BCP”]
We are unique in that we want to encourage everyone to get outdoors, not only to pick up recyclables and trash, but to enjoy the beauty that surrounds us everyday!
By developing stewardship of our resources, you will feel empowered and part of the positive change that we all can become. Please join us at any or all of our events this summer, as we hold them every weekend. Feel free to “like” our Facebook page and share with your friends, family and colleagues! We look forward to getting to know each and every one of our members and getting them involved in making Baltimore beautiful!
